NYPD: Woman found dead; grandson charged with murder
Police are leveling murder charges against the 32-year-old grandson of a woman whose dead body was found wrapped in a sheet outside her Crown Heights home Thursday.
Police say neighbors found the body of 70-year-old Joyce Spears near some trashcans on Union Street around 2 a.m., at the end of a bloody trail that led investigators to the third-floor apartment she shared with her grandson, Barry James.
James allegedly barricaded himself inside the home, and police say they had to cut a hole through the wall to reach him.
Police are accusing him of attacking Spears with a dumbbell and a knife.
Neighbors say the woman was a nice, quiet lady who kept to herself.
The building's superintendent and landlord were also questioned by 71st Precinct officers, according to the superintendent's wife.
Neighbors say James has a history of prior arrests and also once assaulted his own grandfather, who is now deceased. News 12 is also told that James is schizophrenic and was often seen walking in the area while talking to himself.
