Detective, firefighters honored as 'Heroes of the Month'

The borough president, FDNY and NYPD honored an NYPD lieutenant detective and two firefighters Tuesday at the borough's monthly "Heroes of the Month" celebration.

Every month, the borough recognizes the extraordinary service of individuals who go above and beyond to protect our communities.

Lt. Detective John Russo is a Williamsburg-raised police officer whose diligence helped crack the murder case of the slain jogger, Karina Vetrano.

The borough also honored firefighters Todd Brenner and Andrew Scharf of Ladder Company 176 in Bed-Stuy, who successfully performed a rare roof-rope rescue to save a man from a burning church in Ocean Hill.

"It's just a good feeling getting recognized for something making a difference," said Scharf. "You go to work all the time hoping to make a difference and help somebody, and when you finally get that chance it feels amazing."
