Winter weather results in lack of blood donations
The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood or platelets to make up for the loss of donations in March.
The humanitarian organization says that as many as 150 blood drives in New York were canceled this month due to winter weather. They say blood donations are needed urgently for heart surgery, organ transplants, sickle cell disease and other medical emergencies.
Michael de Vulpillieres says the recent snowstorm forced blood drive cancellations that resulted in more than 5,000 blood and platelet samples going uncollected.
"That's why it's so critical to give," de Vulpillieres says. "Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. is in need of blood."
