Weekly hospital workshop helps diabetics eat healthy, exercise

Cumberland Hospital in Fort Greene is taking on diabetes with weekly workshops aimed to help people fight the disease.

Organizers say they encourage diabetics to control their blood sugars by eating more vegetables and whole grains and to be more active.

Nutritionist Theresa Brereton helps run the Monday meetings.

"We focus on lifestyle, their eating, also fitness, exercise in whichever form," Brereton says.

Doctors say the best way to keep tabs on diabetes is to get an A1C test, which measures an average of blood glucose, every three months.
