Vigil held for slain EMT

The community came together Sunday to remember a 44-year-old emergency medical technician who was killed on the job last Thursday.

A candlelight vigil was held for Yadira Arroyo this evening at the corner of White Plains Road and Watson Avenue.

As News 12 reported, Arroyo was killed after a man stole the ambulance she was driving and ran over her and her partner with it.

Authorities say the incident began as Arroyo and her partner were driving the ambulance, when someone told them a man was hanging onto its rear bumper.

When the two EMTs stopped the vehicle at Watson Avenue and White Plains Road, police say the man, Jose Gonzalez., carjacked them and mowed them down.

The 25-year-old Gonzalez is now facing murder charges. Gonzalez's attorney says her client is severely mentally ill and did not act intentionally.

Wake services will be held Thursday and Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lucchese Funeral Home on Morris Park Avenue.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation donated $100,000 to Arroyo's five sons who now must live their lives without their mother.
