Box truck hits, kills woman in Brownsville

A box truck struck and killed an 81-year-old woman in Brownsville Thursday at the corner of Rockaway and Atlantic avenues.

The victim, who police did not identify, was crossing Atlantic Avenue. A laundry company truck, turning left, slammed into her, police say.

She was taken to Brookdale Hospital but did not survive.

The truck is apparently owned by Rainbow Two Laundry on Pitkin Avenue. A worker there told News 12 the company's owner is currently out of the country, and no one was authorized to speak with reporters.

The driver remained at the scene. A crossing guard who was on duty at the corner did not want to speak with News 12.

Witnesses say the crossing guard was blowing her whistle at the truck in an effort to have it stop.

It was not immediately clear whether the driver would face charges.
