Crown Heights residents oppose new homeless shelter

Some local officials showed up to answer questions from the community about a new homeless shelter set to open in Crown Heights.

The location for the proposed shelter is 1173 Bergen St. It's set to open March 22 and would serve 104 single men from Brooklyn ages 62 and older.

Some residents say there is an oversaturation of shelter facilities in the community, and some even say they believe it would be unsafe adding another one.

The Department of Homeless Services sought to assure the community there will be no sex offenders allowed at the new location.

Throughout the meeting there were people screaming or holding up signs. Officials and Community Board 8 told residents many times that they would halt the meeting, but it didn't come to that.

The DHS says it believes that everyone deserves housing.
