Man shot in Greenpoint Avenue standoff dies

A man shot during a standoff on Greenpoint Avenue died Friday.



As News 12 reported, police in riot gear and in armored vehicles found the victim Monday shot and bleeding on the sidewalk. At the time, the suspect was armed and barricaded himself inside a building.



Joseph Stepinski, 45, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition but died Friday night of his injuries.



The suspect, 51-year-old Gene Barrett, surrendered to police after the standoff.



He was originally charged with assault and attempted murder. There is no word yet on if the charges will be upgraded.
