Vigil remembers 8-year-old killed by fallen planter box
A candlelight vigil was held in Gerritsen Beach Friday in remembrance of an 8-year-old boy who died after a heavy planter box fell on his head.
Police say Kevin Reilly climbed up a metal gate in his front yard on Ryder Street in Marine Park around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Police tell News 12 he grabbed onto a concrete flower planting box, which came loose. The boy then fell back, and the heavy planter fell on top of him.
Emergency responders say they arrived to find the boy unresponsive and unconscious with a trauma to his head. He was pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital.
Neighbors say Reilly's family moved onto the street last summer. Reilly is described as a typical kid who loved his two sisters and baseball, which is why the vigil was held on a ballfield.
