PARK SLOPE -

Students from the Secondary School of Journalism in Park Slope have won Samsung's national Solve for Tomorrow competition with an app that pairs needy students with free lunch.

News 12 reported in January that a group of students from the school was working on an app to help students find free meals.

After months of work and research, they've won the $150,000 prize for their school.

The advanced placement computer science students picked up the project after learning about the number of students who needed free or reduced lunches in their school.

According to New York state, 72 percent of New York City students receive free or reduced lunches.

The students' Moesy app aims to battle hunger in the Big Apple and elsewhere.

Moesy allows qualifying students to get paired with free nearby meals at schools or restaurants. It is scheduled for a limited launch on June 16 and is expected to expand.
