Sunset Park gym offers free boxing program for youths
A boxing gym in Brooklyn is helping young people in Sunset Park stay active.
Sweatbox Brooklyn closes its doors to clients every Thursday for two hours and opens up for young people in the community free of charge as part of their “Youth Fighting Forward” program.
The idea was started by gym co-owner Argenis Arce and professional boxer Frank Galarza.
"Let's do this once a week. Let's give them two to three hours after school. They can come and they can work up all their sweat and they can get their energy out and they love it," says Arce.
Arce and Galarza both have boxing roots in Sunset Park, and their Youth Fighting Forward program has proved to be a success among the children in the neighborhood.
Parents, children and trainers tell News 12 that there are not many activities for young people in Sunset Park. Therefore, programs like Youth Fighting Forward are essential to keeping kids in the ring and off the streets.
