The New York Botanical Garden's farmers market opened Wednesday for the summer season, and many residents took advantage of the weather to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables.
The market has expanded largely this year, going from about three vendors to 13. Fruits and vegetables, jams, local coffee and baked goods are being offered.
Organizers say the farmers market is an opportunity for people to not just get a taste of what New York has to offer, but to also explore the Bronx and the Botanical Garden.
"I don't think the farmers market is the primary function why people come here, so it's a happy surprise for some of them when they get here," says market director Pascale Ledraoulec. "We hope to have people from the community come here and shop."
There is also a food valet at the market to hold patrons' food in coolers while they explore the grounds.
