Relatives of a man who died while being taken into police custody in 2014 met with the Department of Justice in Downtown Brooklyn Wednesday for an update on the civil rights probe into his death.
Eric Garner died after he was placed in what appeared to be a choke hold by an NYPD officer. A Staten Island grand jury declined to indict the officer on criminal charges.
"The nation is watching this case, because this case was the beginning of a wave of a call for justice," says the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist.
NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo initially confronted Garner for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. The Justice Department has spent the last two years investigating whether Garner's civil rights were violated.
Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, says the family still doesn't know whether the officers involved will be held accountable.
"We shouldn't have to wait like this," she says.
