Some NYCHA residents in Fordham Manor say growing piles of garbage have become a smelly breeding ground for rats.

Residents of the Bailey Houses on Heath Avenue say the garbage has been scattered throughout the overgrown shrubbery for at least a year.

Weeds and grass partially cover the eyesore that residents of the city's housing authority have become accustomed to.

One resident says the rodents are so common a rat even hopped on a woman's lap while she sat on a bench.

They say they have called 311 multiple times to report the problem.

A NYCHA spokesperson told News 12 in a statement, "Our residents deserve to live in clean communities. We are quickly and thoroughly cleaning the development. We can and will do better."

The trash has accumulated because people who do not live in the complex are throwing their garbage over the fence and onto the property, according to NYCHA, who has connected with a contractor to manage the cleanup and maintain the property moving forward.
