Gen. Thomas Francis Meagher's body was never actually found after the Civil War, but his memory will live forever at Greenwood Cemetery.
Born in Ireland, Meagher was a revolutionary in the Irish rebellion against the British. He was sentenced to prison on Tasmania, then escaped – making a new life in the United States. He led an Irish American brigade in the Union Army that fought Civil War battles at places like Fredericksburg and Antietam.
After the war, his friend President Abraham Lincoln made Meagher the governor of Montana. That's where he died just a few years later, but his body was never found.
To mark the 150th anniversary of his death, a statue displaying his likeness was placed next to his wife's grave at Greenwood Cemetery. She was a Brooklyn native.
Gen. Meagher is also credited with designing the Irish flag.
