A Brooklyn international food hot spot now has a prestigious award to add to its already respected reputation.
Sahadi’s in Brooklyn Heights is known for its variety of nuts, cheeses, specialty olive oils and more, but now they have more notoriety after winning the 2017 James Beard America’s Classics award.
The store was chosen among thousands last month after being nominated for its “timeless appeal” and reflection of the “character of the community.”
Co-owner Christine Sahadi Whelan has kept a connection to her roots with the store. Her grandfather, Wade Sahadi, an immigrant from Lebanon, opened the store in 1948.
Sahadi’s opened as a Lebanese grocery store, but it now brings in food from all over the world, catering to the diversity of Brooklyn and fostering a sense of community.
"We want that sense of small town belonging to be what you feel when you walk into Sahadi's," says Whelan.
