The family of a man who was fatally shot by police in Canarsie is pleading for the case to go before a grand jury.
James Owens, 63, was shot and killed in January.
Owens' family says they believe the two officers who responded to the Jan. 3 incident recklessly discharged both a stun gun and/or another device and then shot him.
Police say Owens approached the officers with a large kitchen knife at the time of the incident. They say they first used a stun gun, but when that didn't work, they shot him.
In a statement after Wednesday's meeting between the family and the acting Brooklyn district attorney, the DA's office said, "Today, DA Gonzalez met with Mr. Owens' family, listened to their concerns and assured them that he will continue to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into this case."
News 12 reached out to the NYPD but has not yet received a response.
