Residents debate true names of well-known neighborhoods
As new neighborhood names pop up across the city, a debate on one area has people split – East Williamsburg or Bushwick?
Neighbors near the Montrose Avenue L train stop proclaim they’re in Bushwick, but city maps say otherwise.
The Department of City Planning says the area is called East Williamsburg. Bushwick cuts off at Broadway and Flushing Avenue.
Longtime residents say the name changes occur to boost property values.
The Department of City Planning says neighborhood names aren’t officially designated, which seems to be why new names appear across the city.
Another example of name discrepancies includes South Slope and Windsor Terrace. In fact, South Slope isn’t even a recognized name by the Department of City Planning.
But some residents in these “disputed” areas say the culture that is attached to some neighborhood names is what is more important.
