Some Brownsville residents say they are furious and feel unsafe because of people living in the Renaissance Men's Shelter.
They say the men who live at the shelter on Ralph Avenue are using and selling drugs, urinating publicly and performing sex acts on the street. They say they are also harassing people, panhandling and breaking and stealing property.
Residents say they have reached out to the shelter many times and were told the shelter doesn't have control over what the people do outside of the facility.
They say they have started a petition to get police to patrol the shelter at all hours.
A Department of Homeless Services spokesperson told News 12: "We are proactively engaging homeless New Yorkers both inside and outside of this location to address concerns about loitering and are investigating these allegations. We continue to work closely with the NYPD and the community to enhance safety and improve quality of life for clients, staff and neighbors alike."
