CROWN HEIGHTS -

An apartment fire early Thursday morning in Crown Heights left an 81-year-old woman dead and several others displaced.

Flames broke out inside the third floor of 1347 Pacific St. around 12:30 a.m.

Family members identified the victim as Gertrude Duncan, whom they described as a lovely woman. The mother of seven was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 49-year-old woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for burns to her hands.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Red Cross officials say they'll return to the scene on Friday to install smoke detectors for residents on the street.
