Church members dispute man's claims of being assaulted

BROOKLYN -

Church members are disputing a man's claims that he was beaten, robbed and kicked out of his church last Friday because he is gay.

Members of Bethel United Zion on Dean Street say Devon Bailey was not granted permission to stay there and was found under a sink at the time of the incident. He had told News 12 that he was allowed to stay at the church for free in exchange for working there.

Church members claim Bailey was not assaulted. As for his injuries, they say he fell down stairs while running away after he was discovered in the church.

The NYPD says it has a report of the incident, which is being investigated as a robbery since Bailey reported that his money and phone were stolen.
