Retired correction officer injured in gas station shootout
A retired correction officer was injured in an attempted robbery-turned-shootout at his Bedford-Stuyvesant gas station.
Around 1:30 p.m. Monday, police say two men tried to rob the Sunoco gas station on Gates Avenue and were greeted with gunfire from station owner Hilary Farmer. Sixteen shell casings could be seen on the ground in the aftermath.
Police say Farmer was shot in the knee. Friends say he is a 70-year-old retired correction officer who goes by the nickname "Junior."
Both suspects fled the scene. There was no word on whether they were injured in the exchange of gunfire.
Farmer was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
