A St. Barnabas Hospital doctor shared health advice for parents and players of fall sports a day after a teenager collapsed and died at football practice in Wakefield.
Dr. Jeffrey Lazar says students should first undergo a pre-participation exam, or PPE, with their regular doctor about six weeks before practice begins.
"If there are questions that come up in the exam, there is ample time to investigate them before the start of the sporting season," he says.
The PPE looks at a child's medical history and medications and also includes a normal physical.
