Councilwoman Barron faces primary challenge in 42nd District

BROOKLYN -

Incumbent Inez Barron is looking to defend her role representing City Council's 42nd District, a job her husband Charles Barron held before he moved on to the state Assembly in 2013.

In a primary election on Sept. 12, she faces a challenge from Mawuli K. Hormeku, a nonprofit chief who says he's a leader, not a politician.

The district covers much of East New York, New Lots, Remsen Village, Spring Creek and Starrett City.

Barron says she wants to add jobs to the district by negotiating with mixed-use developers to provide office space for entrepreneurs. She also wants all housing developments built in the district to cater to low-income tenants in an effort to reduce homelessness.

Hormeku supports vocational training in schools and a home-buying assistance program for district natives to help keep them local. The program would finance down payments and forgive the loan if the resident stays for 10 years.
