Police say a 17-year-old student brought a gun to the George Westinghouse Career and Technical High School Thursday morning, the first day of the school year.
Authorities say safety officers found an unloaded .25 caliber pistol in Adrian Carr's backpack after he walked through a metal detector.
The school remained open for the rest of the day after a 15-minute "soft lockdown," officials say. Carr is facing criminal charges.
Students say they have faith in security officers, but the incident still came as a shock.
"I just came to school to do my work, and somebody pulled an illegal weapon," a student at the school told News 12 Brooklyn. "I'm just trying to do my schoolwork, finish my senior year and go to college."
