School faculty: Lack of traffic signs unsafe for students crossing street

Parents and faculty members of a Catholic school in the Bronx say a lack of traffic signs and an increase in speeding motorists poses a safety risk for students crossing the street.

There is a crossing guard outside the St. Francis of Assisi at the Corry Early Childhood Academy on Barnes Avenue in Wakefield.

However, there are no pedestrian safety signs or speed bumps on the streets to alert motorists that children are crossing the street.

Staff members say that motorists often exceed the city speed limit of 25 mph and the school zone limit of 15 mph.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation about the matter and is waiting to hear back.

School officials say the issue has been ongoing for years.
