East Flatbush residents worried over changes in neighborhood

EAST FLATBUSH -

Residents in East Flatbush say they are concerned as new buildings are beginning to pop up in their area.

As 1519 New York Ave. is being converted to a five-story, eight-unit building, many are worried that it will ruin the feel of the neighborhood.

Residents say that Victorian houses in the area will disappear if similar apartment buildings spring up. They also say they are worried about what the increased population will do to parking.

Some people who just moved to East Flatbush are worried what kind of neighborhood they have moved into.

"The property taxes of the current inhabitants of this area will skyrocket and the enjoyment of their home will decrease, further causing families to vacate," said Alyson Martinez, of East Flatbush.

Councilmember Jumaane Williams is asking for contextual zoning, which would limit the height of the buildings and prevent future projects from happening.
