A teenager who is seen in viral cellphone video being pummeled by an NYPD officer appeared before a judge Wednesday.
The incident unfolded at the corner of 225th Street and Broadway in Marble Hill Friday morning after 16-year-old Alfred Burns allegedly stole a bicycle. According to reports, Burns had his hands around the neck of one of the responding officers, and that's when the officer's partner jumped in to assist. The larger officer is seen in the video striking Burns multiple times in the head while onlookers scream for him to stop.
Burns is charged with assault, larceny, resisting arrest, possession of stolen property and giving a fake name to officers.
News 12 cameras were not allowed in Wednesday's court hearing, and family members of the defendants did not wish to speak.
The case has not yet been presented to a grand jury. Burns' lawyer told the court Wednesday that Burns will not testify before the panel.
Burns has two priors that include two robbery charges. He's due back in court Dec. 4.
The NYPD tells News 12 that it is reviewing the video and that the case is under investigation by internal affairs. News 12 reached out to the PBA for comment but did not immediately hear back.
