Nearly a month after Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria, one Brooklyn man is raising awareness for the region’s ongoing with a creative awareness campaign.
Nelson Cruz is fundraising for relief efforts by selling hats embroidered with awareness ribbons that are colored with the Puerto Rican flag. Cruz tells News 12 he thought of the idea because his dad is stuck in Puerto Rico until the end of the month and is facing the wreckage firsthand.
Cruz says his goal is for people to see his hats and remember the suffering still felt throughout the island.
News 12 is told Cruz has already sold more than 100 hats at $20 each, with 100 percent of the proceeds supporting relief efforts.
