Hundreds of Department of Sanitation workers were honored Friday at a ceremony in Brooklyn for their hard work and sacrifice.
Ralph Alonso was one of the workers praised for his efforts when he jumped into action after violence claimed the life of another city employee. He helped police catch the suspect behind the killing of EMT Yadira Arroyo earlier this year.
"Not many people would be brave enough to do that, and Ralph was," says Daniel A. Nigro, FDNY fire commissioner.
Also recognized was Joseph Caggiano. He was praised for his dedication to the job.
"It's a great honor," Caggiano says. "I'm working 51 years."
The ceremony was held at the Christian Cultural Center. Members were honored for promotions, years of service and going above and beyond.
