Dumbo was one of many areas of Brooklyn that felt the wrath of Superstorm Sandy. Five years later, News 12 checked on a neighborhood bakery to see how it has managed since the storm.
Almondine Bakery opened in 2004 and enjoyed great success, with full seats and a seemingly never-ending line of customers. But Sandy destroyed the popular Water Street bakery, flooding its basement and ruining everything needed to make desserts.
"I don't want to remember," says owner Herve Poussot.
But Poussot considers himself lucky. Four months and $200,000 later, he was able to reopen the shop. He says the building's landlord, combined with the GoFundMe effort started by customers, saved Almondine.
Poussot made changes to the basement to help keep water out in case of another flood. But if another storm the magnitude of Sandy hit, Poussot says he would likely not go through the ordeal again.
"I put the key on the door and say, 'bye,'" he says. "I'm too old to start again."
