Fifteen new high school wellness spaces across New York City designed to promote mental health have been completed.
The mindfulness room at Brooklyn College Academy in Kensington features mood lighting, candles and cushioned seats - all designed to be a calming atmosphere for students.
Students say they enter stressed but leave refreshed and more mindful as they continue their day.
The program is part of the Mental Health by Design initiative. The 15 participating schools around the five boroughs received a grant of $10,000 each through Thrive NYC.
The schools were encouraged to design places to support mental well-being or increase physical activity.
The completed projects include murals, gardens, meditation rooms and mindfulness rooms.
Schools that received funding through Mental Health by Design include the Academy for Career and Living Skills, Longwood Preparatory High School, Mott Hall V School and International School for Liberal Arts.
