A Brooklyn teacher is sparking conversation with a recent blog post about Halloween costumes.
Sachi Feris is a blogger at Raising Race Conscious Children, an online resource for adults who are trying to talk about race with kids.
She recently wrote a post saying it's offensive for white children to dress up like Disney's Moana. When her daughter wanted to be Moana for Halloween, she says she told her that Moana is based on real history and a real group of people.
She went on to say that if we are going to dress up as a real person, we have to make sure we are doing it in a way that is respectful. Otherwise, she says “it is like we are making fun of someone else's culture."
