Community advocates accuse a Brooklyn recycling company of hurting the environment instead of helping it.

Brooklyn Resource Recovery has been in East Flatbush for about 30 years. Community leaders say it is mishandling its waste, illegally storing and dumping toxic materials and causing hazardous pollution. Activists say they attribute a large fire to the flammable toxic waste processed by the company.

Another issue, according to elected officials, is a wall at the company's site that they call dangerous and say was built without a permit.

News 12 called the number on Brooklyn Resource Recovery's building several times, and no one answered.

A Department of Buildings spokesperson says there have been no complaints lodged over the construction of the wall, but an inspector will be sent to investigate it.

The Department of Environmental Conservation tells News 12 that it conducted two inspections at Brooklyn Resource Recovery, one in October and another in November. No violations were found.
