A community is pleading with Nassau County to speed up plans to put a traffic light at an intersection that's been the scene of dozens of accidents.
Kerry DeLuca, of Garden City, says she's seen more than 30 accidents over the last year at the intersection of Third Street and Cathedral Avenue. The spot is in front of her home.
“We’ve all had cars in our bushes on the front lawn, cars flipped over … it’s serious,” she says. “I mean, these aren't fender benders.”
Nassau County approved a traffic light for the intersection in September. But almost two months later there has been no construction. Police say there have been 10 more accidents since the light was approved.

“I feel like every day, the longer it takes, someone will eventually be killed in one of these accidents,” says DeLuca.
DeLuca believes the spike in crashes is partially due to app-based GPS navigation programs routing cars through the intersection.

“It’s become a cut-through,” she says. “Our whole town is a cut-through, especially this area. Because we don't have a traffic light, the app Waze or GPS sends everyone down our block.”
Nassau officials tell News 12 Long Island that it has studied the intersection and a contractor will begin construction soon on the light. But it didn't have a timeline for completion. Nassau officials say a pedestrian walkway and lights will be added to the intersection as well.
