1 of 4 suspected Wilton jewelry thieves stands before judge
A New York mother accused in a Wilton jewelry heist appeared in a Norwalk courtroom Thursday.
Yolanda Santa, 56, is one of four people suspected of stealing more than $21,000 in merchandise from Campus Jewelers in October.
She was arrested last month and brought back to Connecticut Wednesday.
Police say they have arrest warrants for the other suspects. Court documents list them as Jorge Miranda and Santa's two daughters, Erika Santa and Paula Hurtado.
Authorities say all of them are known to police in New York City and Nassau County. Records show the daughters both have prior theft convictions.
Police say Santa and her daughters distracted two workers at Campus Jewelers while Miranda took merchandise from behind the counter and put it into a shopping bag. They say the group then bought an item with cash and left. The store didn't notice the missing items until later.
A lengthy investigation followed, involving help from the NYPD, the Nassau County Sheriff's Department and the FBI in New York City.
Miranda allegedly admitted his involvement to police but disputed the amount he took.
Police say they have not recovered the stolen jewelry.
