Health officials: Elizabeth student dies, possibly from flu
Elizabeth elementary school student Daniela Genaro was the third New Jersey child to die after getting the flu, according to New Jersey health officials.
Students and staff returned to classes Tuesday morning at Nicholas LaCorte-Peterstown Elementary School, which Genaro attended. Grief counselors were scheduled to be at the school.
Officials have not said whether Genaro received a flu shot prior to getting sick. The girl’s official cause of death is still under investigation, according to the school superintendent.
In a letter sent home with students, Elizabeth Public Schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer added that the district's nearly 35 schools have been continuously sanitized since the fall and assured parents that the buildings are clean and safe. However, some parents told News 12 New Jersey that they are still scared about their children getting the flu.
At least 85 children have died nationwide from the flu since the season began. A 6-year-old North Bergen girl also died last week, prompting New Jersey’s health commissioner to announce an increased effort to combat the illness.
Elizabeth's Health Department hopes to schedule additional clinics making the flu vaccine available.
