A 6-year-old girl died from flu complications over the weekend, according to Norwalk Public Schools.
The district says there was no indication that Emma Splan's illness was related to her school, Columbus Magnet in South Norwalk. But to be cautious, the principal ordered a "deep cleaning" before classes resume Tuesday after Presidents Day.
On Monday, the school went ahead with an ice skating event that was already planned.
Parents say, despite the cleaning, they're nervous about sending their kids back to school.
"I'm really worried because I don't know if it's going to be safe to take them back tomorrow, so I don't know what to think," says Natalie Estay.
Counselors will be available at the school on Tuesday.
"This tragedy has brought us unimaginable sorrow and heartache," the principal said. "We could always count on Emma constantly doing the right thing at school and thriving. Our hearts go out to her loving parents."
State health officials have not confirmed Splan's death as being flu-related.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the Splan family.
The virus killed a 10-year-old boy from New Canaan last month.
