Community leaders call for replacement of Taxi and Limo Commission

Community leaders and representatives from the livery cab industry gathered Friday to address the growing tensions between drivers and the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission.
Rep. Adriano Espaillat is calling for the replacement of the TLC, advocating for a new agency to regulate the industry.
“The TLC is a dinosaur,” he said. “It should be dismantled.”
The congressman outlined several proposed changes for the commission, including the reassignment of its enforcement to the NYPD and swift reductions in fines for street hails. Espaillat claims aggressive and excessive fines have made it almost impossible for drivers to earn a living.

City Councilman Ruben Diaz, head of a recently formed committee to address issues regarding the commission, says he agrees with Espaillat that the Taxi and Limousine Commission is hurting drivers and needs be replaced.
News 12 has reached out to the TLC for comment but has not yet received a response.
