Bronx senior Maya Dixon was chosen as the Gold National Medalist for this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
The 17-year old, who attends Fieldston High School in Riverdale, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship. She plans to use it toward her tuition at Cooper Union.
Dixon says her paintings illustrate the vast contrast between her Allerton neighborhood and her affluent school environment. “Especially as a person of color in an elite private school, it makes you have to form and found your own racial identify down deep and find who you are,” Dixon says.
Dixon will be honored at Carnegie Hall in June as part of a week-long national celebration.
