Bridgeport police say they are teaching their school resource officers the latest methods for dealing with an active shooter in response to recent school shootings nationwide.
The training was held Friday at the Central High School campus.
Police say officers no longer have to form a perimeter around the campus; they can go right in and confront the shooter to save time and lives.
Police Chief AJ Perez says the Valentine's Day massacre in Florida underscores the need for intensive training.
"It makes me sick, it makes me very sad," he says. "I put myself in the place of those parents and it really makes me wanna cry to see the waste of humanity."
Sgt. Angelo Collazo, who led the training session, says keeping something like the Florida attack from happening in Bridgeport is his top priority.
Bridgeport police say they've recently added four new school resource officers with the help of a federal grant and that they will soon be adding five more.
