More than 1.4 million people live in the Bronx, just about meeting the historical population last seen in 1970, according to the New York City Department of Planning.
The Department of City Planning showed that according to the last U.S. Census, not only is the population at a high, but the Bronx saw the highest growth amount all of the counties in the entire state of New York since 2010.
News 12 The Bronx is told that Crotona Park East and Morrisania are two of the neighborhoods that have seen some major growth during that time period.
Carol Samol, of the NYC Department of City Planning, says the increase in population in the borough has been due to the combination of migration of people from other countries as well as people remaining in the Bronx and starting families.
“We are working hard to grow smartly, to make sure we're implementing plans and working around transit and infrastructure so we can sustain the growth,” says Somal.

She says the plan aimed to rezone and revitalize a 2-mile stretch of Jerome Avenue is a great example of strong neighborhood planning.
“We need to be putting our voice out there and be counted so we get the dollars we need from the federal government,” she says.
