Aunt: Bronx shooting victim was a hero

Posted: Updated:
THE BRONX -

The aunt of a man whose suspected killers were found guilty of murder last week says he was a hero.

In March 2015, Army veteran Jason Lloyd Allwood, while playing billiards in a bar, saw a man being viciously kicked by another man and stopped the attack. Allwood's aunt, Sharon Brwy, says a patron told the victim's brother, Carlos Velez, that Allwood was the person who committed the violence.

"He did what he did -- save the life of that man," Brwy says.

Hours after the attack, prosecutors say Velez and his brother-in-law, Luis Charbonier, ambushed Allwood on Murdock Avenue, where Allwood was pistol-whipped and shot. Brwy says one of the hardest parts of the monthlong trial was hearing the 911 call of her nephew right after he was shot. She adds that she thinks neither suspect showed remorse for their actions.

Brwy says Allwood, despite having cancer, volunteered his time to coach youth basketball.

Both men face 25 years to life in prison at their sentencing on May 16.
