Teens at Freeport High School received a special prom gift this year thanks to two groups founded by Nassau police.
The Nassau County Police Hispanic Society and the Nassau County Association of Women Police collected prom-wear and accessories from every police precinct in the county. This year marked the first of what organizers say will be an annual event.
“We realize that the young people in our community really need to see what else the police department does in terms of community service,” said Victoria Ojeda, of the Nassau County Police Hispanic Society. “And being that prom season is such an expense for so many people, we realized this was the perfect way for the police department to reach out."
Almost 300 donations, both used and new, were given to students across Nassau County.
All donations that are not selected by a student will go to the Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
