Boogie Down Bites: 188 Bakery Cuchifritos

The core of Puerto Rican culture can be found frying up inside one local eatery in the Bronx.
Jose Coto is the owner of 188 Bakery Cuchifritos, where patrons can find many foods that represent Puerto Rico.
Cuchifritos, which means fried pork, is just one of many fried items on the menu. There's also Puerto Rican blood sausages, yuca and platanos.
Coto says one interesting fact is that he is Cuban not Puerto Rican. He immigrated from Cuba in 1960 and worked for his father and uncle, who ran a Puerto Rican food business.
Coto opened Cuchifritos in 1982 and says through the years he picked up tips from the various Puerto Rican cooks who worked for him. He says now he makes his own alcapurria from scratch and customers rave about it.
