Students' renovation ideas become reality at TAPCO school

Student-generated ideas for remodeling one Bronx school have become a reality with construction now underway.
Students at the Theatre Arts Production Company School (TAPCO) began coming up with ideas to renovate their school a few years ago. Students say they thought it would be great to create a rooftop garden and soundstage for the school. Digital design students took the ideas and created renderings of what the space could look like.
School officials took the renderings to Councilman Ritchie Torres for approval of the project. The project was given the green light and now $2.5 million has been allocated for renovation.
"It's the first of its kind in the Bronx," says Councilman Torres.
Construction on the rooftop garden began last week. Students will maintain the area, which is exciting for members of the garden club.
Students from the garden club say they're excited to be able to grow plants on the roof. They say it's great to finally get the space they need.
The garden will also feature a soundstage so students can film outdoors. Principal Ron Link says the students will get to do some "cutting-edge stuff."
The project is expected to be completed by April 2019.
