#N12BK: Students protest summer camp cuts

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK -

Dozens of school students in New York City are protesting Mayor Bill de Blasio's decision to cut funding to summer camp programs.

The school students and other city youth organizations went to city hall Tuesday to urge the Youth Service Committee to restore the funding.

Funding for summer camp programs for 34,000 middle school students has been left out of this year's budget.

Organizers say there is a special urgency for the students’ plea as summer camps are scheduled to begin soon after the mayor’s budget is adopted on July 1.

They say the city council needs to provide certainty on funding as soon as possible to program administrators, staff, parents and students because they need sufficient time to gather staff and secure space for students enrolled in summer camp programs.

They say the budget cuts affect both camp staffers who rely on it as income and parents who depend on camp as a place for children to stay during the summer months.
