Newark Mayor Ras Baraka wins another term

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has won another term as the mayor of New Jersey’s largest city.
Baraka held a victory party at the Robert Treat Hotel Tuesday.
Earlier in the week he predicted that he would win in every ward in the city – which proved to be correct. Baraka defeated challenger Gayle Chaneyfield-Jenkins by almost 15,000 votes.
Baraka says that he will continue to build affordable housing and community schools in the city. He also says that he will build on the accomplishments and promises that he made in his initial run in 2014.
Other mayoral elections of note: John Pallone, brother of Rep. Frank Pallone, has defeated Long Branch mayoral incumbent Adam Schneider. Schneider has previously won the mayor’s race seven times.
Paterson Councilman Andre Sayegh was elected mayor of that city. There were six people running as mayor, but Sayegh received nearly half the votes. Sayegh replaces Jane Williams-Warren, who served as interim mayor following the corruption conviction of former Mayor Joey Torres.
Bayonne, Belleville, Irvington, Ocean City and Trenton also held mayoral races Tuesday.
