Residents: Dealerships illegally park cars on sidewalk

Posted: Updated:
BAY RIDGE -

Neighbors are fed up with car dealerships they say illegally park cars on the sidewalk.

A few cars could be seen parked on the sidewalk along 4th and 5th avenues in Bay Ridge.

However, neighbors say it doesn't stop with cars parked on sidewalks.

"They back up the cars and don't even look. There could be a baby or someone pushing a stroller and they just back up," one man says.

Employees at nearby Signature Auto Group say they do park cars on the sidewalk, but only temporarily before they are moved into the showroom.

"We have a parking garage we use down the block on both sides, and we keep cars there too," an employee says.

However, Councilman Justin Brannan says he’s co-sponsoring a bill that would revoke the license of car dealers who receive just two or more violations a year for illegally parking vehicles on the sidewalk.

"There's cars that just aren't supposed to be on the sidewalk," Branna says, “It’s about being a good neighbor. Not every dealer is bad, but there are some who don’t even care.”

The fine is currently $115 for illegally parking a car on the sidewalk in New York City.
