BROOKLYN -

More than 36 million Americans are hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend, despite higher gas prices.

According to AAA, gas in New York City is about $3.20 a gallon, 24 cents more than the national average.

There is a nearly 5 percent increase in people traveling this weekend compared to last weekend according to AAA.

AAA says the evening commute Friday and Saturday could be the most hectic times on the roads. AAA is also telling drivers to expect traffic to be heavy Monday when everyone heads home.
